The CAPM 23 Contact Hours Requirement
It's the one prerequisite people trip over: you must complete 23 contact hours of project management education before you can sit the exam. Here's exactly what counts, and the cheapest ways to get them.
The CAPM has only two eligibility requirements: a secondary diploma, and 23 contact hours of project management education. The diploma you already have. The 23 hours are the real gate — and you attest to completing them in your PMI application, so this isn't optional or something you can hand-wave.
What is a "contact hour"?
A contact hour is one hour of instruction in project management topics. 23 of them means roughly 23 hours of coursework — lectures, guided modules, or a structured self-paced course — completed and documented. It's about instruction time, not how long you spent studying on your own.
What counts
- PMI's own course. PMI offers a course (Project Management Basics / the official CAPM prep) built specifically to satisfy the 23 hours. It's the most direct route and leaves no doubt about eligibility.
- Authorized Training Partner (ATP) courses. Many third-party providers offer CAPM prep courses that grant the 23 contact hours — online, self-paced, or live.
- University / college courses. Relevant project management coursework can count.
- Employer training. Formal internal PM training may qualify.
Whatever route you take, keep the certificate of completion. You declare the hours (provider, dates, hours) in your application, and PMI can request proof during an audit. No certificate, no eligibility.
What does NOT count
Self-study on your own doesn't count toward the 23 hours — no matter how many hours you put in. Reading, watching random videos, or grinding practice questions is excellent preparation, but it is not instruction from a recognized provider. The 23 hours must come from a structured course. (This is the distinction that surprises people: the education requirement and your exam preparation are two different things.)

The order is: complete the 23-hour course → create a PMI account → submit the application (confirming your education and the hours) → pay the fee → schedule the exam.
