How Much Does the CAPM Cost?
The exam fee is only part of it. Here's the full, honest total — exam, the required course, membership math, and retakes — plus the two moves that keep it as low as possible.
Getting CAPM-certified has three cost buckets: the exam fee, the 23-hour education requirement, and optional PMI membership (which usually pays for itself). Budget for all three so nothing surprises you at application time.
The exam fee
PMI charges the CAPM exam at two prices:

Fees vary by region and change over time, so treat pmi.org as authoritative. The gap between the two prices is the reason membership math matters (below).
PMI membership — usually worth it
PMI membership costs roughly $140–150 per year (annual dues plus a one-time application fee). Here's the trick: the member exam price is about $75 lower than the non-member price. So membership nearly pays for itself through the exam discount alone — and it also unlocks a digital copy of PMI standards and member resources. For most first-time candidates, joining first and then registering as a member is the cheaper path.
Non-member exam ≈ $300. Member exam ≈ $225 + membership ≈ $145 = $370 — but you keep a year of membership benefits, and if you retake or pursue the PMP later, the member rate keeps saving you money. If you're one-and-done and certain to pass, non-member can be marginally cheaper; otherwise, join.
The 23-hour education requirement
Before you can sit the exam you must complete 23 contact hours of project management education. This is a real, separate cost. Options range widely:
- PMI's own course (Project Management Basics / the CAPM prep) satisfies the 23 hours.
- Third-party CAPM prep courses from authorized training partners — anywhere from around $50 to $400+ depending on depth and format.
- Some university and employer programs count. Keep your certificate of completion — you attest to the hours in your application.

Retakes
If you don't pass, PMI charges a reduced re-examination fee (lower than the first attempt, and again member-vs-non-member). You get a limited number of attempts within your one-year eligibility period. The cheapest retake is the one you don't need — which is what good preparation buys you.
The all-in estimate
For a typical first-timer going the member route: roughly $225 exam + $145 membership + $50–200 course = about $420–570, once. Add your study tool of choice. There's no subscription to the certification itself, though you'll later maintain it with PDUs (see keeping your certification).
