CAPM Eligibility & Requirements
The CAPM is deliberately accessible — no work experience required. There are really just two boxes to check before you can sit it, plus an application. Here's exactly what they are.
Unlike the PMP, which gates on years of project experience, the CAPM is designed for people just entering project management. That's the whole point of an "associate" credential. Here are the actual requirements, per PMI's published criteria.
The two requirements

That's it. Notably absent: any requirement for project management work experience. If you have a secondary diploma and you complete the 23 hours of coursework, you're eligible.
This is the one requirement people overlook. You must complete 23 contact hours of project management education before you sit the exam — and you'll attest to it in your application. PMI offers a course that satisfies it; many third-party CAPM prep courses do too. Keep your certificate of completion.
Do you need project experience? No.
To be unambiguous: the CAPM requires zero hours of project management experience. This is what makes it the right certification for students, new graduates, career-changers, and coordinators who understand the work but haven't formally "led projects" for years. How to apply
- Create a PMI account at pmi.org. (PMI membership is optional but usually pays for itself through the exam discount and resources.)
- Complete the online application — you'll confirm your education and your 23 contact hours.
- Pay the exam fee once your application is accepted.
- Schedule your exam through Pearson VUE — either at a physical test center or as an online-proctored exam you take from home.

The exam itself

Keeping your certification
The CAPM isn't permanent once earned — it runs on a three-year cycle, and you maintain it by earning professional development units (PDUs) through PMI's Continuing Certification Requirements program. The exact number and rules are set by PMI and can change, so check the current CCR requirements on pmi.org when your cycle begins. For most people that's a future concern; the immediate task is qualifying and passing.
