CAPM vs the Google Project Management Certificate
They're both pitched at people entering project management, but they're different kinds of thing — one is a certification you pass, the other is a course you complete. Here's how they really compare, and how to choose.
The key distinction up front: the CAPM is a certification from PMI — you meet requirements and pass a proctored exam. The Google Project Management Certificate is a course on Coursera — you complete a series of self-paced modules and earn a completion certificate. Both teach entry-level project management; they signal different things to employers.

What each is good at
The Google certificate is the most accessible on-ramp there is: no prerequisites, self-paced, subscription-priced, and it introduces both predictive and agile ways of working with hands-on assignments you can put in a portfolio. It's excellent if you're exploring whether project management is for you, or you want structured beginner content and something to show for it fast.
The CAPM carries more weight precisely because it's harder to get: a real eligibility bar and a proctored exam. In project-management-specific hiring, "CAPM" is a recognized signal in a way a course completion isn't. It's the better choice when you're committed to a PM path and want a credential that clears résumé screens.
A common, sensible path: do the Google certificate first to learn the fundamentals cheaply and build a portfolio — then use that foundation to earn the CAPM as the recognized credential. The Google course can even help toward (though check whether it satisfies) the CAPM's 23-hour education requirement. Together they cover "I learned it" and "I certified it."
How to choose

- Committed to a PM career and want a credential employers weight → CAPM.
